When I was younger, I used to dread going to the gym with my mom. She is retired from the military, so staying in shape was definitely a part of her lifestyle from early on. Growing up, there were many an early morning or evening after work when she would take me along with her to the base for one of her daily workouts. I could hang for about 2 consecutive days, but after that, I resigned myself to thinking that she was just “doing the most.” Fast forward to now….my mom still goes to the gym almost everyday, but for the last three years that I’ve been to visit her during Winter Break, going to the gym with her is something that I look forward to. As an adult, I have body goals, a 10 year HS reunion to look forward to, and the importance of staying in shape is so much more relevant to me now that I’m getting older. So, this is where I’m beginning. As a 27 year old, who finds herself saying “I’m turning into my mother” every time that she gets up at 6:30 am just to get a workout in or realizes that she’s the youngest person in a sea of middle aged women in her fitness class at the YMCA. There are worse things. So cheers to new beginnings and to finally embracing my mother’s old habits.
